5 Pillars of Health

Preventing disease is easier than you might think. Check out our 5 pillars of health for some of the more important factors in staying healthy.

Keeping yourself healthy isn’t easy. Even people with balanced lifestyles experience fluctuations in their wellbeing, from time to time. It’s natural for this to happen. Still, if you feel that fluctuations are quite frequent and persistent, then it might be time for your lifestyle to change. So many aspects of our daily routine affect our physical and mental health. It’s understandable, then, that many of us might adopt some healthy habits but neglect other aspects of our wellbeing. These are some overlooked health aspects that you could start fixing.

Exercise

This word, on its own, is enough to elicit groans. Physical activity might evoke the same response from you. Perhaps you view a gym workout as an activity reserved for fitness enthusiasts who want to look good on Instagram. Perhaps you view jogging as an activity reserved for those who simply want to lose a bit of weight. If you look and feel reasonably healthy, then you might not think that exercise is a necessity for you. However, exercise is a necessity for everyone. Yes, physical activity can help people to lose weight, but it can also improve the health of their hearts and the health of their minds.

A regular fitness routine should be an important part of your daily lifestyle. Even if you think you’re skinny enough, you need to keep your body active. Skinniness isn’t always a sign of healthiness, after all. Exercising will help you to gain and maintain a healthy and balanced weight. It’ll also help you to gain muscle mass, and that’ll make your body stronger; it’ll make you less susceptible to aches, pains, and injuries. So, find a form of physical activity that works for you. It could be something as simple as going for a walk during your daily lunch break.

Dental hygiene

You should also focus on your dental hygiene if you want to improve your health. This is an area of wellbeing which is overlooked by many people. You might scoff at that idea, especially if you brush your teeth twice a day, but many factors contribute to the healthiness of your teeth and your gums. You might want to start flossing daily, for instance; this will help to avoid plaque and tartar from building up. As a result, you’ll be able to prevent tooth loss from your gums receding. You should also think about your diet; sugary foods and drinks can lead to the decay of your teeth. Of course, if you’ve already damaged some of your teeth, then you might want to look into options for dental implants or other forms of dental repair such as fillings to get your pearly whites back up to scratch.

One of the best ways to prevent and even heal bad teeth (yeah, you heard me) is through this simple regime created by a dentist. We’ve used it in our family and had dramatic results.

Mental health

Mental health, unfortunately, is another aspect of people’s wellbeing that they often overlook. If you find yourself neglecting your emotional health problems, then it might be time to address them. Being open with yourself is the first step. Simply burying your problems won’t make them go away. You wouldn’t ignore a broken leg or a bad wound, for example. Still, mental health is often viewed as something which can be brushed to the side because it’s not as visible as physical health. A stigma exists with regards to this topic, and that can make many people feel as if their problems aren’t real problems. So, there’s a real lack of discussion on many issues, such as anxiety and depression. However, if you want to start getting better, then you have to start facing your problems. Mental health issues can be just as serious as physical health issues; in some cases, they can be more serious.

Talking to other people can really help, too. You don’t need to find solutions to your problems from your friends and family members; you just need to open up. Sharing your problems with your loved ones will help you to start accepting and addressing your struggles. It’ll help you to unburden yourself of the weight you’re carrying. Remember, the important people in your life want to be there for you. Your support network is very important when it comes to the wellbeing of your mind. Don’t dismiss such an integral part of the recovery process. In terms of actually working through your problems, of course, you might want to see a therapist or a psychiatrist, depending on the nature of your mental health issues. Make sure you also set aside time for yourself to relax on a daily basis; as this is also a crucial element towards attaining a better standard of mental health.

Rest

Rest is another important aspect of a healthy life. If you’re depriving yourself of the sleep you need, then you should make a change to your lifestyle. You might think that tiredness can be fixed with a hot cup of coffee and a refreshing shower. Those things might perk you up, temporarily, but a lack of energy is only one consequence of a sleep-deprived routine. When you deny your body the rest it needs, you’ll also weaken your immune system, slow your metabolism, and even affect the wellbeing of your heart. So, your bedtime routine has more of an effect on your health than you might appreciate. If you want to start fixing your physical and mental wellbeing, then make it a priority to get 8 hours of sleep on a nightly basis; this aspect of your health should not be overlooked.
