Chia Fresca Super Drink! blank630x20

Chia is one of those foods that wears a cape… i.e. a SUPER FOOD! I had read some about chia seeds in my study of eating healthy through the years but never actually tried them. They are listed as the aforementioned a Super Food in many books.  Then I read the book Born To Run bBorn To Runy Christopher McDougall where he talks about his experience with the Tarahumara tribe in Mexico and their incredible endurance that seems to come naturally. One of the main staples of their diet is a drink made from chia seeds to which they attribute much of their stamina.  Always looking for new things to try that are healthy I made a batch and I really liked it! So I wanted to share the recipe plus a little info on chia seeds for those who might find it of interest.BLANK 800 x 75

[su_quote”]Months later, I’d learn that iskiate is otherwise known as chia fresca—“chilly chia.” It’s brewed up by dissolving chia seeds in water with a little sugar and a squirt of lime. In terms of nutritional content, a tablespoon of chia is like a smoothie made from salmon, spinach, and human growth hormone. As tiny as those seeds are, they’re superpacked with omega-3S, omega-6S, protein, calcium, iron, zinc, fiber, and antioxidants. If you had to pick just one desert-island food, you couldn’t do much better than chia, at least if you were interested in building muscle, lowering cholesterol, and reducing your risk of heart disease; after a few months on the chia diet, you could probably swim home.
