No Fireplace? Make a Simple Stocking Holder!

No fireplace to hang your Christmas stockings? We'll show you how to make a simple and easy stocking holder from a dowel, some cup hooks, ribbon and paint! blank630x20

I grew up in Mesa, Arizona and fireplaces were in short supply. I had some pretty cool parents though and they actually bought a fake cardboard fireplace just so we could hang our Christmas stockings. How I loved that fireplace!

How to Make a Stocking Holder My Old Fireplace

blank630x20If you don’t have a fireplace, cardboard or not, you can  make your own stocking holder with a dowel and some hooks and ribbon. It’s easy and inexpensive and you can hang it on any wall with a couple of nails!

Stocking Holder Supplies

  • Wood dowel 7/8″ x 36″  (size can vary)
  • 2 Wood balls with flat side. 1″ to 2″ in size
  • Paint of choice. (We used gold.)
  • Glue for attaching balls to ends of dowel
  • 40″ of 1″ to 2″ wide ribbon. I used grosgrain. (Will be cut in half.)
  • Metal cup hooks. I used 1/2″ size
  • Drill with tiny bit (optional but helps in inserting hooks)
  • Metal grommets (optional)

Cut your ribbon into two pieces, approximately 20″ each.  I had a small grommet set so I hammered those into the ends of my ribbon. However, you can use any method you like to hang your holder to the wall! No fireplace to hang your Christmas stockings? 3. Hey…I grew up in Phoenix, but we did have a chimney. Phoenix and Mesa are not that close, but it is possible we crossed paths at some point!? Last year I realized that one of the bloggers I was interacting with was a former neighbor that I used to babysit. She now lives in the East and I live in the Midwest. Crazy small world!!
