I’ve got some, fun unique (you know how I love the unique stuff!) DIY ideas for decorating your kitchen that are low cost, plus some tips to make your kitchen pop. This is the last stage of our Outdated Kitchen Makeover before the final reveal. (eeeeeek…. I’m SO excited!!!!) Many of these items below have been done as previous posts and we’ll link to those. But you should come away with some good inspiration. And if you’re really into room makeovers, make sure to check out our Budget Bedroom Makeover and if you want to see something particularly unique take a look at our Whimsical Living room Makeover. That takes unique to a whole new level!
Kitchen Decorating Ideas
I use a lot of artificial flowers to brighten things up. At some point we will be replacing our old stove but until then we’re giving it color with a new backsplash which was just a sheet of metal, flowers and colorful towels, which by the way are for decor only.
Our Lovely Little DIY Sugar Bowl was a really popular post. Make your own, easily!
I have some expensive knives but my holder had empty spots. We hit the dollar store and bought a few that matched the colors of the kitchen and filled up the rest of the knife holder.
You may recall our Simple DIY Pantry. I pulled out my Silhouette Cameo and created a small label for it to match. This can be by using frame or scrapbook letters too!
The top half of the pantry door has this wreath on it. I found it 50% off at Hobby Lobby. It was just plain as shown. I added the flowers and a few strawberries to pull in some red.
We had an open space above the fridge which will eventually be taken out. For now, we put up a few things we already had, including some cookbooks.
This little Sundae Recipe Holder was another popular post and its made from a candlestick holder! It even holds full sheets of paper.
I had fun arranging these shelves Roy built for me to hold appliances. I added an old brown clock on top that I spray painted and then some flowers and a candle I already had. Next shelf has cookbooks, a basket from the Dollar store and some artificial apples I had. I purchased some red kitchen tools from the Dollar Store to hang on the side of the shelves, then purchased a nice set of oven mittens from Walmart.
This Chicken Wire Frame Note Holder is fun to make and also sports faux succulents from our Pine Cone Craft post.
My daughter Jennifer did this for me as a surprise and I was so touched by it. She took a piece of the old wallpaper that was in the kitchen before ripping it all off and painting, and framed it for me. You can read about this special kitchen keepsake on the post If These Walls Could Talk.
These are one of my favorite decor pieces which are above my kitchen window and cost the least to make. They are from our Dollar Store Plastic Plate Kitchen Wall Decor post.
I wanted something special on the ceiling rather than my normal old fashioned light cover. I had this large wire bowl and it fit over and tightened on perfectly!
We’ve always had a small wipe off board on the kitchen wall or refrigerator for writing down things we need to get at the store. Our last was a bit small so our daughter Jennifer who played a huge role in the kitchen makeover, had the idea to use a frame we had, the type that is plastic not glass, for a wipe off board. We added a vinyl rose to match the decor and a holder for a dry erase marker. Now we have plenty of room to make notes and keep track of what we’re out of. I’ve even added a Post-it note holder.
Another pop of color was added with some red soup cups that were hung under one of the shelves. This quote is the focal point in the room and you see it as you walk in. As we try to eat healthy I chose it specifically. It’s another one cut from vinyl using my Silhouette Cameo machine. (On of the best purchases I’ve ever made I might add.) Whatever you do, make your kitchen about you and a place that has your energy in it and that you feel good being in. Hopefully you’ve got some inspiration for your own home!
I enjoyed all of these, and will look forward to the reveal!
