Hold the Door Supplies

Note: basswood is a thin light wood. You can find it at craft stores. The ones shown were purchased at Ace Hardware for $3.00 each. You could use any type wood that is this size though it would require normal hanging hardware.

Craft Basswood 4″ x 24″ x 1/8th (or .125) “
Craft string or twine, grey (or brown) (We used a soft jute)
Paint, brown and black
Mod Podge
Grey Card Stock
Silver Thumbtacks
Wire cutters (to cut tips off thumbtacks)
Lighter or matches

Video for Burning Paper Edges

Instructions

Water down the brown paint and cover entire board, allowing the wood grain to show through.
Mix black and brown paint with water, creating a very dark brown.
Starting at the edges, make heavy strokes towards the center. Lift the brush as it moves towards the center to create a feathered look.
Print out the free download and cut out the individual words to fit inside the board edges.
Burn the edges of each word with a lighter or match. Work in sections, tilting the paper for varied burn patterns.
Trying to avoid burning the actual letters, blow out the flame after each section. This can be messy!
Use a stick or brush handle to gently scrape away loose debris after flame is extinguished.
Arrange and position the finished words on the board. Make adjustments to the burnt edges as needed.
Once satisfied with the display, remove printed words and cover the board with Mod Podge. Work in sections so that the Mod Podge doesn’t dry before the words are applied.
Gently place words onto the Mod Podge, holding edges into place until dry. Be careful not to smudge the paper with debris from the burnt edges.
Using wire cutters, clip the posts off of 14 silver thumbtacks. To avoid having these posts flung across the room, turn the point towards the table and cup a hand loosely over the tack while cutting.
On each end of the board, apply dots of hot glue. Place the cut-off top of the thumbtack onto the glue and hold in place until dry.
Using craft string or twine, wrap around the board 4 times just inside of the thumbtacks. Tie tightly on the backside of the board and use a dab of hot glue to hold knot in place if needed.
