This rustic Americana decor flag can be hung year round and it’s so easy anyone can make it! All you need is a handful of long craft sticks, some watered down paint and hot glue. We used a soda can tab for the hanger which is perfect for lightweight items like this.
Americana Decor Supplies
- 8 Jumbo Extra Long Craft Sticks (tongue depressor width) Ours were about 7 3/4″ long and 1″wide. We bought them at Hobby Lobby.
- Scissors to cut the sticks
- Hot Glue
- Watered down paint, red, blue, white
- Soda bottle tab for hanging
Downloadable Pattern
NOTE: Always choose ACTUAL SIZE when printing or it will be too small.
Instructions
Mark a small amount off the end of 6 craft sticks making them 7″ in length. Two others need to be cut to the 5″ inch. These will be the back bracing sticks.
Cut the sticks where you marked using standard scissors.
If desired, you can use our free printable to assist you.
Lay your sticks out, staggering as shown.
Take your two 5.25″ backing sticks and glue them carefully onto the back of your flag, keeping it pushed together. This will hold the flag together wonderfully. Just make sure the glue touches every cross stick. We had initially glued the seams of each cross stick together before putting the cross sticks on. This is NOT necessary.
Water down red, white and blue paint to make a wash. Carefully wash the correct sticks the color according to the pattern shown.
After painting each one, quickly wipe it with a tissue or cloth to remove excess and give it a washed look.
Hand paint your star on over the blue section. You can use our printout for a pattern or make your own.
Soda can tabs are perfect for hanging light weight items.
Bend them a tiny amount and glue them on.

I just love the rustic look on this one! (And I didn’t know you could cut craft sticks with regular scissors – going to have to try!)
Thanks Emma. Ü
