DIY Human Sunflower Seed Dispenser

Make this fun human sunflower seed dispenser with an attached shell holder! Snack, toss the shells in the trash, screw the top back on. Genius!blank630x20Finally… a human sunflower seed dispenser!  Aside from all the health benefits of sunflower seeds they’re plain old fun to crack and eat.  But there’s always the problem of the shells, especially if you’re inside.  Well, now you can eat your seeds anywhere and you’ve got a built in shell holder.  After snacking and using the attached holder for the empty shells,  just dump them into the nearest trash bin and screw the dish/lid back onto the container. Genius!  (Visit our other awesome plastic bottle crafts.)

Sunflower Seed Dispenser Supplies

The type of seed dish you want will depend on the supplies.

  • One plastic bottle.  16 to 28 oz works best (larger openings are easier to fill).
  • For plastic bottle container: One more plastic soda bottle that is LARGER than the first.
  • For plastic dish container: a small plastic dish from the Dollar Store in a size that works for your bottle.
  • Hot glue gun or other strong glue
  • Craft knife
  • Iron (optional, if you want to round the edge of your soda bottle seed dish)
  • Printable labels below

Instructions

I used the small plastic drink container and the smaller soda bottle as containers. The large bottle you see was used as the seed dish for one of them.

SODA BOTTLE SEED DISH
Cut off the bottom of the larger plastic bottle for your seed dish.  2 inches works nicely. Make this fun human sunflower seed dispenser with an attached shell holder! Snack, toss the shells in the trash, screw the top back on. Genius!blank630x20

You can use it like this or you can round the edges which makes a nicer container.Make this fun human sunflower seed dispenser with an attached shell holder! Snack, toss the shells in the trash, screw the top back on. Genius!blank630x20

To round the edges of your soda bottle press it firmly against a hot iron for approximately 10 to 20 seconds, watching it carefully until it rounds a little bit. For normal heavier plastic bottles this works wonderfully and doesn’t get anything on the surface of your iron. Make this fun human sunflower seed dispenser with an attached shell holder! PLASTIC BOWL SEED DISH
You can also use a small plastic bowl for the seed dish. I bought mine at the dollar store.Make this fun human sunflower seed dispenser with an attached shell holder! Snack, toss the shells in the trash, screw the top back on. Genius!blank630x20

For whichever seed dish you use you then glue the cap of the bottle into the center of it. Use a LOT of hot glue or another very strong glue to hold it. Press down the lid into the center of your dish. This now allows you to screw the seed dish onto the top of the bottle. Make this fun human sunflower seed dispenser with an attached shell holder! Snack, toss the shells in the trash, screw the top back on. Genius!

You are a genius!! I wish they would sell these at sporting event concession stands! Sunflower seeds are eaten at baseball, softball, football, soccer, etc games and people ALWAYS leave the shells all over the ground “it doesn’t matter they are biodegradable, it’s not littering….” It does matter to the person who has sit there after you! I LOVE this concept!! Thank you so much for sharing!

  2. What a cool project Nancy! I love that you could just grab this and have a snack on the go without loosing them all 🙂 Thank you so much for linking this up to the Bewitchin’ Projects Block Party last week. You are one of my featured picks tomorrow over at Recreated Designs and on Facebook this coming Thursday. Hugs, Lisa

  3. This is great, sure wish this idea would catch on in israel! Here people think that it is totally acceptible to walk down the street eating sunflower seeds and spitting out the shells onto the ground. Big Sigh. And let me tell you, eating sunflower seeds, especially after the shabbat meal on Friday night or Saturday day is a very common thing, so its quite common to see shells everywhere, which of course really bothers me, the considerate American that I am! Thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!

Thanks so much Sara for sharing these little tidbits about life in Israel. I know very little about it and I’ve enjoyed learning more. I always try to be selective with what I share on your site. Hopefully I’ll never share anything that might be inappropriate for your culture or Jewish beliefs which is another reason I enjoy learning more. Ü
